Every March, Basel bursts into a whirlwind of color, music, and satire — this is Basler Fasnacht, Switzerland’s largest carnival and a proud part of UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage. In 2025, the festivities will take place from March 10 to 12.
The celebration begins at 4:00 in the morning with the traditional Morgestraich, when the entire city goes dark, and suddenly, the streets glow with the light of hand-painted lanterns. The air fills with the rhythmic sounds of drums and flutes, creating a magical atmosphere.
During the day, costumed parades bring humor and satire to the streets, playfully commenting on current events and turning the city into an open-air theater. The second day features Guggenmusik, when lively brass bands take over, performing popular tunes in a spirited, carnival style.
A unique symbol of Basler Fasnacht is the Blaggedde — an annual badge with a new design each year. More than just a keepsake, its sales help fund the festival, ensuring this beloved tradition continues.
For three unforgettable days, Basel moves to the rhythm of Fasnacht, as the city transforms into a dreamlike world of celebration and creativity.
