Carnivals in Switzerland
Carnival is a national tradition in most cantons of Switzerland. Various carnival events are organized in the cantons of Vaud, Valais, Fribourg and other locations in Switzerland with elaborate parades - most of them are characterized by wearing masks and performing rituals that are customary for each area.
Usually, traditional celebrations are also present, including food, drinks, local delicacies and crafts, Guggenmusik (costumed brass bands). And, especially for carnivals in Switzerland, there is always lots and lots of confetti!
In general, Carnival covers the period between Epiphany in early January and Shrovetide (3rd February to 9th March). Usually the first day is known as Jeudi Gras (Fat Thursday) and the last day as Mardi Gras (Fat Tuesday), but many people have more than one Mardi Gras!

The Murten Carnival always takes place on the first weekend of March and is an important social and economic event in the Lake Murten region and is highly valued throughout Switzerland.
